Europehouse Srebrenica in Salzburg and Stuttgart

Twelve people from Srebrenica and the region traveled to this week full of lectures, seminars and discussions that dealt intensively with current political and social issues in Europe.

On October 20, 2023, the events began in Salzburg with a round table discussion on cross-border cooperation within the EU. Andrea Folie and Norbert Meindl, mayor of Lofer and president of EUREGIO Salzburg-Berchtesgaden Region-Traunstein, and Markus Hiebl, Mayor of Freilassing, gave insights into the challenges and successes of the EUREGIO Salzburg – Berchtesgadener Land – Traunstein. Afterwards, Dr. Brigitta Pallauf, President of the Salzburg State Parliament, spoke about Salzburg’s role within the EU.

October 21, 2023 was dedicated to the seminar “Do not forget Srebrenica!” in Salzburg. Dr. Doris Wydra from the Salzburg Centre for European Union Studies at the University of Salzburg spoke about the complex relationship between Serbia and Kosovo. Prof. Enisa Suljagić shed light on the current situation in Bosnia & Herzegovina and future prospects. Almir Dudic from Europehouse Srebrenica took a historical and contemporary look at Srebrenica and discussed the challenges and hopes for the future.

The events continued in Stuttgart on October 23, 2023. A discussion with the Department of External Relations took place at City Hall, in which Dr. Frédéric Stephan, Kristina Großehabig and Gari Pavkovic discussed the role of the countries of the Western Balkans and the significance of Srebrenica for Stuttgart. Catherine Kern and Erwin Köhler provided insights into European and international politics in the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.

The series of events was rounded off with a citizens’ meeting on Bosnia at the Europa Zentrum Baden-Württemberg. Here, topics such as EU accession prospects, the influence of China, Russia and Turkey on the Balkans and the possibilities of municipal cooperation between the Europa Zentrum Baden-Württemberg and Srebrenica were discussed. Dr. Doris Wydra from the University of Salzburg provided expert support for these discussions.
